Fragrance Load Guide: How Much Fragrance Oil to Use in Candles

Getting your fragrance load right is essential for achieving optimal scent throw in your candles. Too little and your candles won't smell, too much and you risk sooting, poor burn performance, and wasted money. This guide teaches you the exact percentages and calculation methods for perfect fragrance loads every time.

What is Fragrance Load?

Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil compared to the total weight of wax in your candle. It's calculated as:

Fragrance Load % = (Fragrance Weight ÷ Wax Weight) × 100

Example: 1.0 oz fragrance ÷ 10 oz wax = 10% fragrance load

Recommended Fragrance Load by Wax Type

Soy Wax: 6-10%

Sweet spot: 8-9% for most soy waxes

Light scents: 6-7% (citrus, herbal)

Strong scents: 9-10% (vanilla, cinnamon)

Soy wax has a maximum fragrance load of around 10%. Going higher can cause wet spots, poor adhesion to the container, and sooting. Always check your specific wax manufacturer's recommendations.

Paraffin Wax: 8-12%

Sweet spot: 10% for most paraffin waxes

Standard range: 8-10%

Maximum: Up to 12% for strong scents

Paraffin can handle higher fragrance loads than soy, making it popular for maximum scent throw. However, higher loads require careful wick testing to prevent mushrooming and sooting.

Coconut Wax: 8-12%

Sweet spot: 10% for premium scent throw

Range: 8-12% depending on blend

Coconut wax naturally provides excellent scent throw, so you can often use slightly less fragrance oil while still achieving strong cold and hot throw.

Beeswax: 3-6%

Maximum: 6% (rarely scented)

Note: Most beeswax candles are sold unscented to preserve the natural honey aroma

How to Calculate Fragrance Oil Amount

Here's the step-by-step process for calculating fragrance oil:

  1. Determine your wax amount (example: 10 oz)
  2. Choose your fragrance load percentage (example: 10%)
  3. Calculate: 10 oz wax × 0.10 = 1.0 oz fragrance oil
  4. Total candle weight: 10 oz wax + 1.0 oz fragrance = 11 oz total
